About the Artist
In the time I have been doing Fifteen Minutes of Fame, I have had the privilege to review more than a hundred talented musicians. Any reader who has been following since the beginning, has heard me speak of Midnite Gossip on a number of occasions. Whether it be the review I wrote for their song, Tightrope, or the Blind Reaction for their song Streetlights - Mickey Valenz Remix, or the number of times I’ve spoken to/about them, their music, and their incredible accomplishments. Today is no different, as their contribution to this record is significant. However, this review won’t just be about the incredibly talented Canadian-based duo.
At the forefront, is an up and coming face to the Canadian DJ scene, Sunflower Dreams. Out of Calgary, she debuted as a recording artist in 2024, with the June release of Hybrid Nation, which is an ambient, synth-trip, mid tempo groove. I love how this track really fixates on elements of music to really bring out the melodic phrasing of the piece. At around two minutes in, a piano is introduced that resonates to the entire song, leading to a euphoric climax.
This was followed by the September release of Home, which incorporates a stylistic diversity to Sunflower Dreams’ mixes. With Hybrid Nation, it was more ambient and fantasy driven, whereas home is more industrial and house. Excellent incorporation of vocals in this song.
Something that is striking and experienced is that the percussion is flawlessly done in both of these songs. With techno/house, and other electronic music, there can sometimes be a compulsion to do too much with the beat. Sunflower Dreams transcends this affliction with a poised craft as the beat just melts and resonates throughout the music effortlessly.
Sunflower Dreams will be playing Sled Island in June and is in the process of completing her debut album! She is also working on additional collaborations, so we can expect much more from her very soon!
About the Song
Streetlights is the third release of Sunflower Dreams and the first in collaboration with Midnite Gossip. It is the first release for Sunflower Dreams in 2025 and it released on April 18th 2025. Streetlights has a run time of 3 minutes.
About the Music
Building off her work in home, Sunflower Dreams takes the industrial approach to the next level as this mix offers a complex and intricate reimagination to the original version of Streetlights. Similar to the Mickey Valenz Remix, this mix really picks up the tempo, but the details that are incorporated with the Sunflower Dreams mix really give the impression of a true tempo change.
I also love the experimentation (so to speak) with the sub and bass effects used. This plays heavily into the industrial side of techno, electronic, house music. Last year, one of my favorite artists, Childish Gambino released the album Bando Stone and the New World. Much like Sunflower Dream’s mix here, he experimented heavily with some of these more ambient, saw, and futuristic effects.
The production value of this mix is high quality, professional, and meticulous. I appreciate this so much because, Sunflower Dreams worked on a song that was published by another artist but she treated the song as if it were her own and they have made this mix as if it were hers as well.
Final Thoughts
I’ve known a few DJ’s in my life. When talking about the art form, the answers vary from style to composition, and other components. A good friend of mine, DJ SKY, once told me “it’s easy to be a Jock. It’s as simple as pressing a button. But to really master it. To do it well and appreciate all that you can create, it’s hard work. It can take years to be considered great.”
I can listen to these three songs and one thing is more than obvious to me: Sunflower Dreams is putting in the hard work. Her first release isn’t a year old but I am confident she has been doing this for much longer than that.
Sunflower Dreams is more than capable of letting the beat drop but she incorporates layers of depth in and around the foundation of each song. Anyone who is in the area to see her perform is in for something special, I’m sure.
